Water Restrictions

Guidelines detailing when you can water your lawn are in place for a reason, so you should follow them. Residents living in unincorporated Hillsborough County are permitted to water their lawns in the hours before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. Depending on your address, you are allowed to water on either Tuesday and Saturday, or Wednesday and Sunday. You can find the specific watering restrictions for your home by using Hillsborough County's water restriction address lookup.

You may think that two days of watering isn’t enough, but over-watering your lawn can be just as damaging to your lawn as not watering enough.  That’s because too much water promotes the growth of fungus, weeds and leads to a shallow root system. Less frequent and deeper watering will lead to a healthier lawn.

Reclaimed Water

The County offers reclaimed water to many of its residents. Reclaimed water is wastewater that is treated and made available for a new beneficial use. Take full advantage of this service when irrigating your lawn, washing your car or pressure-washing your sidewalk.

"...to understand what an important natural resource water is..."

Susan Latvala

It’s estimated that 25 to 75 percent of all water used in Florida is for irrigation. Using reclaimed water for this purpose can add up to big savings for our freshwater supply. To learn more about Hillsborough County’s reclaimed water program, click here.

Throughout this website, you’ll have the opportunity to play small videos of people who were involved in shaping Tampa Bay’s water policy. They include activists, elected officials, lawyers and experts. All of them were involved in what is called, “Tampa Bay’s Water Wars.” We thought you’d like to hear what they have to say in their own words. We think you’ll appreciate their very different perspectives.
